Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging System (CenSSIS)

The Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems (CenSSIS) seeks to revolutionize the ability to detect and image objects that are underground, underwater, or embedded within living tissue or manmade structures. The center combines expertise in wave physics, sensor engineering, inverse scattering, computational modeling, image processing, and data management to create new sensing systems prototypes. The CenSSIS partnership includes four academic core partners –Northeastern University (Lead Partner), Boston University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez.

CenSSIS is attaching currently intractable problems in sensing and imaging involving the detection, location, and identification of objects that are obscured beneath various absorptive, diffusive, or dispersive media. Biological, medical, soil, and sea test beds are used to enable a wide range of next-generation sensing and imaging systems.

Integration of Hyperspectral Pattern Recognition and Computer Vision Shape Detection for Subsurface Object Identification

Funds were obtained from NIMA (National Imaging and Mapping Agency) to use techniques of Pattern Recognition in hyperspectral data to enhance present mechanism of creating maps.

Atmospheric Correction for Hyperspectral Data

Subsurface sensing for atmospheric correction applied to hyperspectral data. This project is sponsored by General Dynamics.

Iterative Algorithms for Unmixing of Hyperspectral Imagery

Here we are looking at the use of iterative algotithms to solve the inverse problem of separateing the measured spectral signature inits components and their abundances. Sponsored by Air Force Research Laboratories.

Tropical Center for Earth and Space Studies (TCESS)

Comprises of a multidisciplinary effort in several components: Space Information Laboratory (SIL), Bio-Optical Oceanography, Materials and Electronics for Space Applications (MESA), Information Processing and Extraction Group (IPEG), a small Education and Outreach effort GLOBE/TEST, and Carbon Sequestration in Tropical Watersheds. TCESS was first funded in 1 July 1995, and renewed for another five years in 1 October 2000.

Image Processing and Extraction (IPEG)

The research goal is the development and implementations of algorithms for the processing of remote sensing data. Research at IPEG deals with fundamental work in the areas of signal and image processing and with the application of developed algorithms to challenging problems arising in the distribution, processing, and extraction of information from remotely sensed data. Sponsored by NASA-URC.
